I’m proud to say one of Brownsville’s classic Charro Days Fiesta highlights is a three-day event called the Sombrero Festival. As one of the founders in 1986, we wanted to enhance the spirit of Charro Days. The Sombrero Festival has become the most significant event in
Cameron County, TX, and it benefits multiple non-profit organizations and causes throughout the community.
Located in the Mitte Cultural District on the edge of historic downtown Brownsville, the festival is held in Washington Park. It’s a family-friendly event with food, music, and fun for everyone that starts the last Thursday of February each year. Some of the best activities
include the Jalapeno Eating Contest, Waiters Race, Grito Contest (Mexican Yell of Independence,) a 5K run, Tortilla Frisbee Toss, Hat Stack Relay, and the one and only Frijolympics , a Charro Bean cook-off.
Locals have to be on the lookout for the Beard Posse. If they catch you clean-shaven, you’ll pay a modest fine to support the Historical Museum.
Every good party has to have great music. The festival’s main stage features notable musicians of the Mexican, Tejano, Norteno genres. Simultaneously, the smaller venue offers Latin Jazz, Country, and Classic Rock.
The Sombrero Festival is a Brownsville original you don’t want to miss. Whether you’re a Millennial, Gen X, Baby Boomer, or from the Greatest Generation, you’ll find something to love about the Sombrero Festival. Kids’ admission is free.
