Things to do in BTX: Where the fiesta is made for the family!

If you are planning a fun and unforgettable weekend with your family, Brownsville will be your best-kept secret to discover. You might ask what activities are to do for this Charro Days weekend? Well, we have the answer here!  

From stopping by our Gladys Porter Zoo and fishing to our Boca Chica Beach, or if you are running with a little extra time pass by Elon Musk’s most recent creation SpaceX and enjoy the look on your children’s dream of becoming an astronaut.

Day 1  

If you have just landed and are looking for a place with all the information you need for your trip, please stop by our Brownsville Convention & Visitors Bureau, and we will help you discover our most visited sites, provide maps and brochures for your exciting weekend, and certainly have the answers to all of your questions.  

After your rain of information, you would like to get settled into your reserved hotel, or if you’re planning on searching for one, we have a few you may want to consider. The first option, near all of your ‘to-do’ list we recommend  Motel 6  located across the street from our Visitors Center on 2255 N. Expressway. This motel offers affordable and comfortable hotel rooms for families. If you like a high-class service, we recommendHomewood Suites Inn . We recommend Homewood Suites Inn, located on our 3759 North expressway, if you like a high-class service located on our 3759 North expressway. Brought your furry friend? No problem! Our  Residence Inn by Marriot  is a pet-friendly hotel located on 3975 North expressway 83 and will be ready to welcome you. Bonus hack! All of these hotels offer round-trip transportation to and from the airport for an additional cost based on hotel daily rates.

Hungry? If you’re starting to get a little hungry after searching for your hotel room. We recommend you to stop by and get the menu a la carte food at our local family-friendly restaurant,  The Vermillion,and you´ll find everything from tex-mex nachos to the juiciest flank steak. If you want plenty of options located in the same place, we recommend the international buffet atGolden Corral.

It’s time for family adventures! Have some fun time with your kids and finish your day with a relaxed but chill activity; visit our  Galaxy Bowling Center,  where you can find the best bowling activities and arcade game room available under all of the sanitary requisitions. Want more than just bowling? Our interactive and extreme activities at  XTREME Fun Park  offers you and your family laser tag, mini-golf, indoor inflatables, and a virtual reality arcade. You can’t miss out on this kind of experience. Plus, it closes at midnight!  

For dinner, head to  El Ultimo Taco  for award-winning, exquisite tacos de tripa or pastor accompanied by delicious frijoles charros. You will love this amazing taco place with a Mexican sazon!  

 

Day 2 

Hope you’re not tired yet!… We are just getting started! Start your day by having a delicious brunch at ourMainstreet Deli  located in the heart of our Brownsville Downtown, on 1157 E Washington St. You will find their worldwide favorite Bill’s lemonade which you can accompany with a chicken croissant, grilled cheese, and a sweet strawberry delight. If you’re feeling more Mexican come over toRicardo’slocated on E. 10th Street and taste their sweet and spicy chiles rellenos or a menudo.   

If you are feeling energetic, pass by our bike share B-Cycle! It offers affordable pricing from $2.00 – $6.00 for bike rentals and allows you to know our downtown from a local view. There are three stations located near downtown: La Plaza Bus Station, Linear Park, and Dean Porter Park. All of these stations provide sufficient bikes for you to use.  

 

Children’s Museum

 

Not feeling the exercise vibe? No worries, we have an activity for everything! Pass by our Gladys Porter Zoo  where your kids will be thrilled with all of the fun activities they provide. You can talk and walk with all types of animals and check out their new family members such as lemon sharks and cassowary chicks hatch. If you are not too tired, across the street you will find our  Dean Porter Park  which is a local favorite. It has over 10 individual free picnic areas, a playground for children with physical challenges, a walking and fitness trail, and a butterfly garden. For additional fun, don’t miss out on our  Children’s Museumwhich is located within the facilities of Dean Porter Park, this facility has a general admission of $9.00, and children under the age of 1 year enter for free. This museum holds numerous exhibitions throughout the year, you can’t miss out on The Amazing Castle exhibition which shows king-sized fun, learning, and imaginative play. 

Before anything else happens, you can’t miss out on Charro Days Carnival located on Old Amigoland Mall, and then the Illuminated Parade which takes place on E Elizabeth St.  

Bring your full energy and enjoy our family fiesta! And don’t forget to pass by our most famous, Texas bucket list and over 100 years old Rutledge Burgers. This small but famous place will bring happiness and childhood memories to the forefront of your mind.  

 

Day 3  

It makes us very sad to see you go, but don’t forget that this is your home and you can never be that far from it. If you plan to leave in the morning, don’t forget to stop by our most visited barbacoa restaurant ‘’Vera’s’’. Famous restaurant and listed as a MUST within the valley. If you like flour tortillas and scrambled eggs with chorizo for breakfast try Arado’s Restaurant located in the heart of Brownsville Downtown; this place will be to your liking.  

After breakfast, stop by with our friends from the farmers market? Have lemonade with freshly squeezed lemons, or learn about bees and their honey production. In this local market, you will find the best farmers in the area and the best advice on natural well-being. They are placed every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and don’t forget to take the family photo on our inclusion Caboose.
