On November 12th, 2024, the City of Brownsville adopted an ordinance requiring all short-term rentals to register and remit applicable taxes on a monthly basis. A summary of the requirements is below, and you can begin registering now by clicking the button below.
We will also be hosting an informational webinar/class on June 9th at the Brownsville CVB building to provide an overview of the process and offer assistance with registration.
1. What is a Short-Term Rental (STR)?
A residential property or portion of a property rented for 30 days or less.
Includes platforms like Airbnb, Vrbo, etc.
Applies to full units or individual rooms
Permit Requirements:
Completed STR permit application
Proof of ownership or management agreement
Floor plan and site map
Emergency contact info
Proof of liability insurance
Permit Fee required of $50 usd
Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) Reporting Compliance:
All STRs are required to collect and remit HOT through OpenForms.
HOT Collection Portal Link: (TBD)
HOT must be reported and submitted monthly to avoid any penalties.
